Local Trade Information: Myanmar's Import Regulations

Mynamar government
to import promotion
of left-hand drive!

(Oct.9 2013)

The future policy of the Myanmar government on imports of motor vehicles has been presented at the newspaper of Myanmar. To summarize the contents, accidents are occurring frequently by left-hand drive since the right hand drive are mixed on the road at present, it completely eliminates the right-hand drive car by around 20 years after taking into account the safety of traffic.

The government planned for a change in June 2014 of its import regulations that Import of old model year of right-hand drive car is prohibited and all types of new cars with right hand drive, including the passenger cars will be prohibited. Only import of left-hand drive new cars will be permitted.

It doesn't necessarily mean that import of right-hand drive cars would be forbidden by law to enter the Myanmar right now.  However, Myanmar government would prefer to encourage the importation of the left-hand drive cars in a near future. It could be expected that since the right-hand drive is still in need for Myanmar used car market, Myanmar's market situation would likely and gradually shift from right-hand drive to left-hand drive.
