most preferred used cars in India: Survey

Maruti Swift Dzire, Hyundai Santro Xing among most preferred used cars in India

CHENNAI: Models from Maruti and Hyundai are the most preferred used cars in India, according to a survey conducted by Gaadi.com.

Among the models in Maruti's stable, Swift Dzire emerged as a clear winner followed by Alto and Wagon R. Among the Hyundai models, Santro Xing led the way followed closely by i10 and i20.

The survey has revealed that about 73% of consumers are governed by the brand name of the used car while 13% determined their choices on the basis of price points. Fuel type is also a major factor in making the choice with 60% people opting for petrol cars and only 30% going for diesel cars.

The survey has revealed that the SUV & MUV segments in the used car space attract lower demand due to new car model launches like Eco Sport, Duster and others. The A4 segment, consisting of cars like the Civic and Jetta, are the worst affected with very poor demand, resulting in a dip in resale value.

The survey has indicated that other than friends and relatives, the online route plays a major role in influencing the final decision when it comes to buying a used car.

The key parameters that buyers closely consider before buying a used car are age/year, condition of the car /engine, make/model, mileage and past history. Colour and overall looks of the car also play a key role with white, silver and grey being the most preferred colors.

Umang Kumar, CEO, Gaadi.com, said, "Although the overall auto industry witnessed possibly the worst slump in 10 years, the used car segment remained intact and growing and is looking at an 18-20% growth rate over the next 5 years. The growing middle class and the changing urban transport needs have been the biggest reasons for its growth."

Bowing to pressure, Customs scraps duties on US-made used cars

Bowing to pressure, Customs scraps duties on US-made used cars

Santo Domingo.- The Customs Agency on Tuesday announced preferential tariffs for importers of used vehicles made in the United States, as stipulated in the CAFTA-DR free trade agreement, “provided that the formalities laid down in said Treaty are observed.

The announcement comes after several used auto importers associations on Friday accused Customs of violating the DR-CAFTA by refusing to apply the preferential tariffs and levying a 10% tax on used vehicles.

"Customs advises importers of used vehicles originating from the United States, that at no time refused them preferential tariff derived from the DR-CAFTA, provided they comply with the formalities established in the Treaty," the agency said in an emailed statement.

“The Customs Agency also advises the used vehicles importers that Memo No. 305, of January 13 this year is left without effect, through Memo No. 409, of January 15.”

Car sales in Lebanon up 2% in 2013

Car sales in Lebanon up 2% in 2013

Figures released by the Association of Automobile Importers in Lebanon (AIA) indicate that a total of 36,109 new passenger cars were sold in 2013, constituting an increase of 1.8% from 35,477 cars sold in 2012.

This rise in new car sales is mainly attributed to aggressive promotional and advertising campaigns. Korean cars accounted for 45% of total sales, followed by Japanese cars with a 28% share, European automobiles with 19.5%, American vehicles with 5.5% and Chinese cars with 2.1%. Chinese cars posted the highest growth in sales with a 63.3% rise year-on-year, followed by Japanese cars with a 5.5% increase and Korean cars with a 1.5% rise.

In parallel, American cars posted an 11.2% contraction in sales year-on-year, followed by European cars with a 2.4% decrease.

Kia is the leading brand in the Lebanese market with 9,310 cars sold in 2013, followed by Hyundai with 6,901 cars sold, Nissan with 4,974 cars, Toyota (2,189), Chevrolet (1,184), Renault (1,065) and Mitsubishi (940).

In parallel, a total of 2,257 new commercial vehicles were sold in 2013, up by 3.3% from 2,185 vehicles sold a year earlier, and up by 9.2% from 2,067 vehicles sold in 2011.

The AIA indicated that the combined number of registered new and imported used cars in 2013 decreased by 6% from the previous year, by 9.5% from 2011 and by 27% from 2010. It said that about 90% of new cars sold during the year were small automobiles that cost about $11,000 each. It noted that the trend towards buying smaller cars is due to the high price of gasoline, the lack of proper public transportation, and fierce competition among car dealers. It added that this translates into lower sales figures and, consequently, a decline in dealers' income.

Land Rover drives Defender to the Pole of Cold

Land Rover drives Defender to the Pole of Cold

You may think it's cold where you are right now, polar vortexes and whatnot, but no matter where you are, you know it's got to be colder somewhere else. Except if you're at the Pole of Cold. The point in Siberia has recorded the coldest temperatures in history, dipping down to -67.7 degrees celsius – that's nearly 90 degrees below on the Fahrenheit scale – in February of 1933, and no walk on the beach the rest of the time, either. That's exactly where this expeditionary team headed in their Land Rover Defender.

The mission was undertaken with support from Land Rover, the Royal Geographical Society and the Institute of British Geographers. The three-man team – consisting of an experienced adventurer, a film-maker and a cold-weather engineer – headed out from the UK, through Scandinavia, above the Arctic Circle, to NordKapp at the top of Europe, and across the Trans-Siberian Highway to Oymyakon, Russia – the coldest place in the northern hemisphere.

Along the way, they celebrated Christmas Day three times, rounded up reindeer with the Skolt Sami tribe, drove on frozen rivers and recorded temperatures as low as -58 degrees C (-72.4 F). Fortunately the Defender, modified with off-road gear and a heater that could operate independently of the engine, didn't let them down, and now the team is on its 10,000-mile way back to England via Kazakhstan and southern Scandinavia.

Used car importers warn of U.S. penalties from ‘illegal tariff’

Used car importers warn of U.S. penalties from ‘illegal tariff’

Santo Domingo.- Several used auto importers associations on Friday accused the Customs Agency of violating the DR-CAFTA free trade agreement by refusing to apply the preferential tariffs and levying a 10% tax on used vehicles manufactured in the U.S.

In a press conference the representatives said Customs director Fernando Fernandez has applied an evaluation method different from the Values Agreement of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

They noted, moreover, that a Customs memo January 13, 2014. also violates the value rules stipulated in Executive Order 36-11 of January 20, 2011, which must be applied to imported goods, including vehicles.

The importers say the measure favors vehicles from Japan, China, Korea, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Thailand and others which don’t have a free trade agreement with the country, for which in their view Customs exerts functions which the Constitution bestows only on Congress.

Penalty

Luis Peña, of the Used Vehicles Importers Association (ASOCIVU), Aramis Mella, of the Cibao Dealers Association (ADECI) and Donald Sosa, among others, warned that the United States could slap trade sanctions on Dominican Republic, if Customs “illegal and arbitrary tariff of 10% isn’t revoked immediately.”

The importers also served notice to the Director of Customs, warning of the consequences of violations in the wake of the measure contained in the memo.

Top ten auto events 2013

Top ten auto events 2013

1. World's top luxury car manufacturer comes to Viet Nam

British luxury car maker Rolls Royce appointed Regal Motor Cars as its first dealer in Viet Nam, giving the company a foothold in one of the region's emerging auto markets. As many as 70 Rolls Royce cars are running in Viet Nam, four of them Phantom Dragons – a limited edition that costs US$1.2 million.

2. Vietnam Motorcycle Festival 2013 revs up HCM City
The Vietnam Motorcycle Festival 2013, the first of its kind in Viet Nam, was held in HCM City from July 27 to 28 and was attended by more than 1,200 high-end motorbikes from clubs nationwide.
The event showcased the latest motorcycles from a wide range of international brands, including Harley-Davidson, Benelli, BMW, Kawasaki, KTM, Pilsa, Suzuki, Triumph and Victory.

3. Automobile firms want import tax payment deadline extended
Many automobile businesses have asked the Government to extend its deadline for import tax payments because they need to concentrate on the automobile industry's development.
These firms include Thanh Cong Joint Stock Company, TMT Automobile company, Hoang Tra Company Ltd, Vinaxuki and Dong Phuong Automobile Company Ltd.
The move follows the Government's acceptance of a request by Truong Hai Automobile Company (Thaco) to extend the deadline from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014 for paying import tax of more than VND1.2 trillion (US$75 million).

4. Viet kieu car imports must clear customs
The Ministry of Finance has proposed that the Government should confiscate those vehicles shipped to Viet Nam that are not eligible for import under the Viet kieu (overseas Vietnamese) policy for moveable assets of repatriating Vietnamese citizens.
The move aims to prevent people from taking advantage of the Government's Viet kieu automobile import policies to make illegal profits.
According to current regulations, Viet kieu vehicles are taxed at a rate of 50 per cent of the purchase price, while cars imported for domestic purchase attract a VAT, import tax and special consumption tax equivalent to over 100 per cent.
The number of luxury vehicles brought in by repatriating Viet kieu has rapidly increased, with more than 1,140 cars imported in 2012, compared with 164 in 2011. They included top brands such as Lexus, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Land Rover, Rolls Royce, Bentley and Ferrari.

5. Automobile owners pay road-use fees
Automobile owners nationwide have been paying road-use fees since January 1. The fees range from VND1.56 million (US$74) to VND12.48 million ($598) and are based on the engine capacity of the vehicles.
The fees collected will be used to maintain traffic systems nationwide. According to the Viet Nam Road Administration, the sector will need nearly VND11,650 billion ($554.76 million) to maintain traffic systems nationwide in 2014.

6. VN Motor Show registers record new car sales
Over 200 cars were sold at the Viet Nam Motor Show—the largest number of new car deals in a single fair since the first show was held in 2005.
The five-day show also attracted a record number of 153,300 visitors, with 50,000 coming on the final day of the exhibition. Attending the show were famous brand names including Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Nissan, Land Rover and Audi.

7Car sales driven by incentives
New car sales in September in Viet Nam soared to their highest level in three years, lifted by a brighter outlook for the economy, attractive financing deals, price discounts and reduced car registration fees.
The country's 18 leading car manufacturer sold a combined 9,785 units in September, up 24 per cent compared with August and 28 per cent over the same period last year, according to the Viet Nam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA).

8. Motorbike makers eye exports
Motorbike manufacturers in Viet Nam are looking to push up exports as the domestic market narrows and competition becomes fiercer. The Vietnamese market consumed about 3.11 million motorbikes in 2012, a year-on-year decrease of 6.6 per cent.
Increasing exports is one way to deal with a decline in domestic sales. Honda Vietnam has already exported several models, including Dream and Wave to other Southeast Asian countries and SH and PCX to European countries.
The company has announced plans to ship Lead 125 CC motorbikes to Japan. Piaggio Vietnam has already begun exporting its products to other ASEAN countries and is trying to get a toehold in the Taiwanese market.

9. Car registration fee reduced
The Government issued a resolution to help struggling businesses and stimulate the slowing economy by cushioning the blow of car registration fees.
The 02/NQ-CP resolution will reduce the new car registration fees to 10 per cent of its total value and 2 per cent for second-hand cars across the country.
At present, three major cities—HCM City, Ha Noi and Da Nang—have reduced the registration fee from 15 per cent or 12 per cent to 10 per cent.
It's reported that the number of car orders has increased substantially ever since the reduction of registration fees was announced.

10. PM issues new regulations on diplomatic cars
Diplomatic agencies, consular offices and the representative offices of international organisations in Viet Nam will be allowed to sell their cars or motorbikes to others in Viet Nam after using them for 24 months.
According to a prime ministerial decree, these agencies can transfer a car or motorbike to staff members of diplomatic agencies in Viet Nam, provided that the individual has worked there for a minimum of 12 months. The buyer does not have to pay import tax.
Secondly, they can transfer the vehicle to anybody, but the buyer will have to pay the import tax based on the car's value.
If the owners don't want to use their cars anymore or their term of office in Viet Nam has ended, they will have to re-export their cars.
Currently, these organisations don't pay any import tax while transporting vehicles from other countries to Viet Nam.

How do you say Hyundai?

How do you say Hyundai?

Hyundai is sponsoring Tate Modern's Turbine Hall for 11 years. But how do you pronounce it, asks Tom de Castella.

Visitors to Tate Modern are used to wrestling with tricky names. Does Paul Klee rhyme with plea or play? Now there is a new challenge. Korean car giant Hyundai is to sponsor the gallery's Turbine Hall from 2015 for the next 11 years, exposing modern art fans to one of the most mispronounced company names in the world. In its own marketing, the firm has riffed on people's phonetic confusion. During the Super Bowl a few years ago, it ran an advert that imagined angry executives at BMW and Lexus screaming the name Hyundai in ever increasing volume. A voiceover signed off: "Win one little award and suddenly everyone gets your name right. It's Hyundai, just like Sunday."

Or is it? It depends where you are, says Jo Kim, a linguist and Korean specialist at the BBC Pronunciation Unit. The original Korean pronunciation is closest to HYUN-day (-hy as in Hugh, -u as in bun, -ay as in day, stressed syllables shown in upper case). Hyundai UK, including its adverts, has a different way of saying it: high-UUN-digh (-igh as in high, -uu as in book, British anglicisation).

Hyundai UK press officer Laura King says this is the traditional British way to say it. But you'll hear two different versions used in the UK HQ, she adds. Those dealing with the domestic market will use the anglicised sound. But employees dealing with the global business will use the Korean version. Hyundai's US operation, true to the Superbowl advert, uses the pronunciation HUN-day (-h as in hot, -u as in bun, -ay as in day, US anglicisation). But in a Californian dealership's Spanish language advert there's another version, sounding something like Han-die.

All clear? That'll be the Daewoo. Which is another question entirely.

Hyundai ‘Santa Fe’ and ‘Grand i10 sedan’ spotted

Hyundai ‘Santa Fe’ and ‘Grand i10 sedan’ spotted

Hyundai ‘Santa Fe’ and ‘Grand i10 sedan’ spotted – Can i10’s reputation dominate Honda Amaze and Maruti Swift Dzire?
I10 hatch back is one of the most reputed models in the segment since its launch which has been dominated brutally by the ‘Grand i10’ recently. The success of both these models has made Hyundai to develop a sedan of the series, the ‘Grand i10 Sedan’ which is due to be launched at the Delhi Auto Expo this year. Prior to the official debut, test mules of the model have been caught with camouflage on their bodies a number of times already. But it was quite surprising for everybody to spot another test mule of the model just about 2-3 weeks before the official launch.

A test mule of the upcoming ‘Santa Fe’ sedan was also spotted beside the Grand i10 sedan and we have a clear picture of the sedan this time. The Grand i10 sedan sported the same seats and the dash board which was used in the hatch back version of the model. The front fascia looks almost similar expect having a different C pillar. Under the hood, the same 1.2 litre Kappa engine is going to be fitted and thus there might be slight difference in the performance among the hatch back and the sedan versions due to the difference in body weight.

Hyundai has used a 5 speed manual transmission gear box in the current edition of Grand i10 hatch back and the same is likely to get carried over in the sedan version too. But we have been informed in the past about a test mule of the model having an automatic transmission gear box. Thus we could expect the model to be available in both manual and automatic versions most probably.

Mixed results for local dealerships

Mixed results for local dealerships

The new year has brought with it a mixed outlook for the vehicle market, as dealers post both positive and negative sales figures for 2013.

Pily Wong, chief executive of Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen distributor Hung Hiep (Cambodia), said sales had been seriously affected by the Kingdom’s political turmoil following national elections in July.

Wong said in an interview earlier this month that the number of vehicles sold decreased by 60 per cent in 2013 from the previous year.

“At the beginning of the year, business was OK. But during the second half, while people began to prepare for the election and even after the election, business has been poor due to the mass demonstrations,” he said, referring to the opposition party’s rallies and marches to contest the results of the poll.

The luxury car dealer also said that lax government regulation on imports has posed unfair threats to legitimate business.

“Competition is not so dangerous for us when everybody plays by the same rules. We call it fair competition. What I worry about is an unfair one,” he said.

Sales for Toyota and Ford, meanwhile, are looking up. They expect another year of positive figures from Cambodia’s growing family vehicle market.

Kong Noun, chairman of Toyota Cambodia, said the carmaker saw a slight increase in sales over the past 12 months, reaching a total of 1,000 units sold. He estimates that figure to rise by 40 per cent to 1,400 units by next year. “Ninety per cent of the cars driven in Cambodia are used cars, but families are now tending to invest in new cars,” Noun said.

He did not specify which new models would enter the local market in the next 12 months.

Toyota’s promising Cambodian figures were not mirrored throughout Asia, however. The company posted a unit decrease of more than 60,000 across the region to hit 779,586 sales, according to the latest financial statements. Seng Voeung, motor vehicle division manager for RMA Cambodia, the country’s importer of Ford vehicles, shared Noun’s optimism for 2014, but said short supply hindered the company’s unit sales for last year. Voeung said RMA’s dealership sales increased by 30 per cent in 2013 compared to 2012.

“Demand for the Ford Ranger peaked last year,” he said. “So there was a shortage of supply for a short time; all the while the demand from Cambodia continued to increase. We do not have enough cars to sell to the customers,” he said.

Driven by Ranger and Focus model sales, Ford posted a seven per cent increase in sales across the ASEAN region for 2013, with an all-time record of 95,906 units sold.

ASEAN unit sales of the Thai-built Ranger jumped by 65 per cent to 45,508, while Focus sales rose by 21 per cent to 9,690 units.

Toyota now no.1 second-hand traded car in Ghana

It has emerged that Toyota Corolla and Camry models are the two hottest used cars everyone wants on the secondary car market in Ghana. The interest has increased following better deals online spearheaded by the number one online classifieds website, Tonaton.com

Three of the five best selling cars right now on Tonaton.com are Toyota, Nissan and Kia despite the massive influx of second-hand Hyundai and Honda cars into the country within the last couple of years. Car garages in the two biggest cities, Accra and Kumasi testify to an increased pressure on the used car market particularly the Toyota models, compared with last year.

Toyota sales accounts for about 33% of all the cars traded on the online classifieds market followed by Nissan with 13%. Kia sales account for 7%. The top three cars constitute almost 53% of all the second-hand cars sold on the online classifieds market in Ghana. One interesting revelation is that even though the average price of a Toyota is pegged at GHc 26,925 which is 17% and 57% more expensive than Nissan and Kia respectively it is still the most patronised brand. This underpins the robustness of the Toyota brand compared to the other brands.

“There is so much demand for Toyota models to stop prices from falling on the second-hand car market. It’s all about good value for money,” a car dealer at Tesano in Accra said.

Between June and November 2013, about 22,000 cars have been listed on Tonaton.com and the site currently has 15,000 available for sale on the website. Accra and Kumasi contribute about 82% of the second hand-cars that are traded on the online classifieds market in Ghana. Tonaton.com has been operative in Ghana since April 2013.

Datsun Aims To Be Hyundai/Kia of Russia, Brazil, and India

Datsun Aims To Be Hyundai/Kia of Russia, Brazil, and India

Time to replace this piece of crap with the Lada in Russia, the Tata in India, and whatever piece of crap car they drive in Brazil. We were quite excited when we first got wind that Nissan was planning to revive its long dormant Datsun brand. That excitement was very short lived, however, because this reborn Datsun wouldn’t be coming to the US. Instead, it's meant to be an affordable brand for emerging markets such as Brazil, India and Russia. The latter specifically has the potential to be extremely lucrative in the years ahead.

According to Datsun’s director of operations in Russia, "The main objective is to be a serious alternative to the used car market – this is where we want to compete." Basically, Russia has a growing middle class that’s got some spare extra cash and more often than not drives old and beat up cars. The lure of buying something brand spanking new instead of used will be very appealing. Hyundai and Kia had the same basic business plan several years ago in the US. In Russia, about six million used cars change hands every year, and Datsun sees huge potential within that market. The price of entry to Datsun will be below RUB 400,000 (about $12,100), and first-time buyers will also be targeted.

Cars.com names Kia Forte best new compact sedan

[U.S.A News] The 2014 Kia Forte also took first place in the Cars.com/USA Today/MotorWeek compact sedan challenge.

Cars.com has named the 2014 Kia Forte the best new compact sedan of 2014, putting the car in contention for the website’s Best of 2014 award. The award is another significant achievement for the Kia, which competes in a tough segment against strong little sedans such as the Honda Civic, Mazda3, Ford Focus and Hyundai Elantra.

Cars.com praised the Forte’s premium features, performance, comfortable interior and refined ride.
“People buy compact cars because they are affordable and efficient, but that doesn’t mean they have to be boring,” said Patrick Olsen, editor-in-chief of Cars.com.

Earlier this year, the Forte also took first place in the Cars.com/USA Today/MotorWeek compact sedan challenge. In the most recent Cars.com evaluation, six compact sedans competed for the annual award.
